Why Tiny Mistakes in Early Creases Get Worse

In origami, we use our reference creases to find other locations for folds. A center crease indicates where an edge should touch, a diagonal marks where two lines cross, and two edges touching indicate a symmetrical relationship between those sections. Because each step typically relies on some aspect of an earlier step, small errors introduced in the beginning can compound over time. It’s not so much that the difficulty increases as you progress, but rather that it can be harder to see the error at the beginning of a model, while it becomes more pronounced by the end.

If you take one sheet of paper and make a diagonal crease, leaving one of the corners out of place when you crease, then open and repeat that diagonal as a reference for your second fold, followed by a couple of symmetrical folds on the opposite sides, you’ll quickly see that the small initial discrepancy grows larger. Even though it didn’t matter much in the first fold, subsequent folds won’t quite match. Unfolding the piece and looking at the pattern, you can see how one small error leads to more errors down the road.

Center creases are probably the most common, since many steps involve meeting an edge to the center. If you think you’re placing a corner on the center line but the center line is already skewed, it doesn’t matter if you do everything else correctly: you’ll end up with an asymmetrical shape. Diagonal creases and intersections of creases are subject to the same problem. If you place a fold one or two millimeters off from where it should be, it shifts the location of the next landmark, which compounds as more and more layers get added.

This can become apparent in shapes that have symmetric components like wings, ears, legs, or flaps. If one side looks shorter, a tip has shifted, or one layer seems to refuse to close in the same way as the rest of the stack, it might be a problem with one of the early folds. You can attempt to reshape only the portion that appears out of place, but you may just make it worse. If the geometry of the model is already incorrect, manipulating it further will only exacerbate the situation. Hard pulling on a flap or flattening out a thick section may solve the issue in the short term, but it can leave behind wrinkles and damaged crease lines.

The best course of action is to look at the model in reverse and try to determine where the symmetry first breaks down. Did the edge really touch the reference crease? Were the corners aligned before you made the fold? Are you moving the correct layer of paper? If you can access that initial crease without having to undo many subsequent folds, it’s better to go back and fix it there than to continue forcing the model into place. Thinner paper is generally easier to re-fold without damaging the crease lines.

Thicker paper can also cause issues. With many layers of paper stacked together, the fold doesn’t take well, and it can slide out of place under pressure. If the paper is already misaligned, the increased thickness leaves less room to adjust. Keeping the layers held near the crease line and folding outwards from the center can help to minimize this. Using thin paper can help determine whether the problem is alignment or stacking.

The goal isn’t necessarily to have every model be completely symmetrical. Instead, the goal is to catch the problem earlier, before it spreads. If a corner didn’t hit its reference point, a center line seems off, or two sides don’t align, it’s time to stop and correct. Fixing a single crease at the beginning is far easier than trying to reshape the entire model at the end.
